Set in the early 1970's, eighth-grader Tony sleuths the death of a robin in his community. This isn't just any bird, it was selected as a mascot for the mayor who is running for re-election with a platform of keeping the environment clean.
Tony, guided by his older brother's research notes on local birds, discovers how intertwined ecology is. The tale is entertainingly told, as the mayor repeatedly ignores some of Tony's warnings, Tony bikes to local marshes and farms, and the school children get involved in keeping their community cleaned up.
George is one of my admired authors, I'm glad to have come across this little-known book.
