Description

18-year-old Svenja is ready to start a new life in Tübingen, far away from her previous home in Leipzig. She even rented an apartment all on her own. Granted, an extremely dodgy one at that, and it's awfully far from university... but it definitely has a gorgeous view.
The only truly odd thing about it, is the mysterious little boy in her kitchen cupboard. He doesn't speak, gets easily scared and seems to spend considerable time standing on his head.
The books started out fairly well, making me excited enough about unveiling yet another day in Svenja's life. I could empathise with heroine's whenever she would be late to yet another lecture/lab, with her conflicting feelings about taking care of the little boy, knowing full well she show more didn't have the necessary time for it. But then a third-way through, I just lost interest.
I'm not exactly sure what it was that made things seem suddenly insignificant. Possibly an unexpected bout of reading slump, or maybe the glacial pacing of the story. Perhaps it was the utterly mundane quality of Svenja's life, where nothing extraordinary seemed to happen... aside from the kid's presence that is, which for a long time remained unexplored.
After I finally managed to pick it up again, it still didn't quite end up grabbing my attention. Especially as it involved Svenja partying a lot with her friends, possibly because I've never really been a party-girl myself. Though I liked hanging out with friends, the appeal of the whole going crazy aspect had always eluded me.
The city of Tübingen however, did make me excited. That's definitely yet another travel destination to add onto my bucket list.
Score 3.6/5 stars
I had initially considered giving the book a 3/5 star rating. The characters are very well crafted, all of them extremely likable, which make later reveals that much more dramatic. I loved how topics like homosexuality were presented as being a completely normal everyday occurrence, instead of the more common educational opportunity route chosen by other similar novels.
It was the ending that eventually made up for the difference in rating. It depressed me more than other Antonia Michaelis books, but it also felt just enough for making me root for violence.
