As a science tex, To Catch a Virus does a thorough job of relaying the history and the important players in the development of diagnostic virology. All they important discoveries and descriptions of the experiments that led to those discoveries are covered in this book. There is also an extensive list of references to the original publications at the end of each chapter. This book is a good reference for any current or future virologist.
As an enjoyable narrative, I found this book very boring and tedious at times. I purchased this book at an ASM conference because the title caught my eye. The title is much flashier than the content of the book and I think a bit misleading. I was hoping for an exciting history on field of virology that told a story of the experiments, observations, and relationships that lead to major discoveries. There is some of this, but mostly is a listing of who worked with who and who did what. The most interesting chapters (i.e. the most like a narrative) were the first chapter and the last. This is why I gave the book only 2 stars. I really thought it would be more exciting. It is a book clearly written by scientist for scientists. ( )
