Sid Vicious: Rock 'n' Roll Star

by Malcolm Butt

Description

Sid Vicious s brief life epitomised all that is rotten and abusive in the rock world. Malcolm Butt exposes the degradation of Vicious s childhood, his introduction into the world of the Sex Pistols, his obsession with violence and descent into heroin-induced paranoia. He unearths a life taken to extremes, and ultimately destroyed by the image of punk rebellion which Vicious died fulfilling. Sid Vicious did it his way and as this book shows, the only way was out.

Though its veracity is sometimes a bit questionable in light of Lydon's autobiography, it's a pretty entertaining read: the hilarious and occasionally sad story of one man's spectacular self-destruction.
This book reads extremely quickly, going from anecdote to anecdote. There isn't much substance, though there are plenty of unconfirmed (or contested) stories and versions of events. Some things are just out-and-out wrong. This was probably intended as a pop, pocket-type biography, but it suffers from inaccuracies and Butt's failure to cite sources.
