This book is presented as a young children’s picture book about friends, a bear and an elephant who temporarily take over running an old fashioned diner. The humorous lingo that is used will be funny to older kids and adults but I think it will go right over the heads of most young children. I enjoyed it very much, both the lingo and the vintage look of the illustrations.
First published in 1988 and now back by popular demand, Good Dog, Carl illustrator Alexandra Day’s Frank and Ernest is the entertaining tale of a bear and an elephant who learn to run a diner. The charming illustrations of the Deco-era diner and the novelty of its animal employees will appeal to children, but the diner slang that Frank and Ernest learn and use will delight parents and children alike.

Frank and Ernest fill in at Sally's diner for three days, learning lots of diner lingo as they go ("Make it cackle and let it walk"). Timeless, funny, and charming.

This is such a fun book. Human like animals Frank and Ernest take over the responsibility of a diner while the owner is away. The fun begins when they read up on diner lingo and then use it through the story while filling orders.
37 months -interesting and original concept. I certainly learned something. O always loves to learn new vocabulary but I'm not sure she's quite ready for diner talk. We will have to get this one again in a year or so.
