Almost the perfect book. Reads well, and provides some interesting insights. Sometimes dissertations turned books can be plodding, but this one moves along nicely. A nice balance between personalities and tactical analysis and shows how much personalities play a role in warfare despite any doctrine. Also considers the role of staffs in the campaign. But the main theme was the clash of service cultures - Army vs Marines - and also their meshing and reconciliation at times to effect victory.
I would look forward to a similar volume on McArthur's New Guinea-Philippines campaign. (
