I think that I like each of King-Smith's animal fantasies more or less depending on how much I can feel the magic. That is to say, if the story pulls me in and enables me to effectively suspend disbelief, I like the story more. Now, I don't know whether the differently immersive experience from book to book is due more to my own perspective, or to King-Smith's effectiveness.

This one requires the reader to imagine, at least for the time it takes to read 72 well-illustrated pages, that reincarnation might be real. When I was a child I did believe, and so probably would have loved this. Now I know better, and I couldn't let go of reality in the 20 minutes it took me to read this.

If you're a slower reader, and can get to know the characters and the enchantment, you'll probably like this more than I did. I hope so. If not, still do as I'm doing and read his other works. I've found several I've enjoyed a lot, and none that are horrible. You probably will, too. ( )
