Description

The author of a number of genre-defining works of science fiction such as Journey To The Center Of The Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, and Around the World in Eighty Days, Jules Verne played a singularly important role in creating and refining the field of fantasy literature. The short story In the Year 2889 finds Verne making a number of insightful and wildly imaginative guesses about what daily life would be like in the future, several of which have already come to pass.

Verne's insightful predictions were amazing, and there really isn't a whole lot else in this little story. It's just a vehicle to present a picture of what future life might be like, and to me it lands as humorous as well as impressive.
Quite short, but interesting how a visionary of his time saw the world going forward. Amazing how close he is with some items (so near, but yet so far) whilst other stuff is just weird...
You just have to admire Jules Verne for his earily good predictions of the future... In this novella, amongst other things, he predicts the existance of videophone and global news coverage by a form of on-demand and live television.
It's quite mindblowing how right he's got it, except for the timeline, all these things developed quite a bit earlier than when he predicts...
Let's face it, this is an old book. But when you really stop and think about what he got right and what he got wrong, you realize that this was a special person.

JV looked a 1,000 years into the future and thought about what man might accomplish. The thing is, many of the things he dreamed up happened in about a 100 years!
This is the far future, as seen by someone in the distant past. It has some interesting point and visions, but does not hold up to the current state of science fiction. It is short, and rather odd. It's all done with mirrors.

In the Year 2889 by Jules Vern is an interesting example of forecasting a future possibility. It was first published in February 1889. Many of his described devices, while called by different names, have come about at the present time. For the imagination involved I gave it four stars.

"Hence is sprung a pleaid of inventor, its brightest star being our great Joseph Jackson." A pleiad is any group of eminent or brilliant persons or things, especially when seven in number.

I would like to thank Kypros Press & Amazon for a complimentary kindle copy of this short story. This did not influence my opinion for this review.
Its fun to read this and see just how much he predicted.
