Description

"Little Virginia lives in an apartment complex in Sydney with her widowed father. She must be left with a babysitter over the Christmas holiday while her father travels on business. Isobel, the sitter, is a reluctant neighbor, pressed into service at the last minute. Annoyed with her lively young charge, she locks the child in the kitchen when her boyfriend visits. Then something unforeseen occurs and the little girl's life is placed in jeopardy."--Jacket.

An outstanding thriller that takes a simple situation and threads a variety of characters together in a highly claustrophic setting. Brilliant characterizations, and a wonderful sense of timing--I was cheering as I finished the last page!
An excellent thriller and a stunning puzzle. Originally published in 1967, and reprinted in 2001.
