Expatriate Korean artist Il Sung Na, whose lovely artwork I first encountered in the bedtime story A Book of Sleep, which chronicles how different animals take their rest, here looks at a number of baby animals on their first day of life. Beginning with a bunch of noisy ducklings, the text considers creatures with lots of siblings (fish) and those with none (a monkey), young who can walk immediately (zebras) and those who must be carried (lions). Babies carried in pouches both maternal (kangaroos) and paternal (seahorses), those born with fur (polar bears) and those born with scales (snakes) - all are considered. At the end of their first day however, they all need their rest...
As is so often the case with Il Sung Na's books, I found show more the artwork in A Book of Babies simply delightful. The text itself is simple, reminiscent of A Book of Sleep, with its look at various kinds of animals, and the illustrations are beautiful. I always appreciate the textured appearance of Na's art, the little designs and spirals on everything from icebergs to leaves, the subtle variations of color that make bark and grass look somehow natural and fantastical at the same time. I don't know that this is a personal favorite of Na's books, but it would make a nice little story-hour selection at bedtime. Recommended to young animal lovers, as well as to fans of the artist. show less

A duck, this time, guides us through the world of newborn baby animals, in the latest book to follow Il Sung Na's winning formula: bright and dreamy collages, with gently rhythmic narration celebrating the diversity of life. Children will have the opportunity to identify the animals (who aren't named in the text), describe what they are doing, and find the duck in each scene.
This is a picture which presents many kinds of animals and facts of their babies. For instance, zebra babies can walk right away; lion baby need a little help; kangaroo babies are carried in their mommy's pouch. This is a sweet, sweet book with beautiful illustrations.
It is more like an information book because it introduces all the facts of the animals' babies.Information books are nonfiction and present current and accurate knowledge about sth found in our universe.
To teachers, it is a nice book which they can use it to teach students to learn many kinds of animals facts. Students are able to be attracted by the nice pictures.
To children, it is a good book for them to learn and easy to learn something they must interest in. They don't show more need to understand or memory hardly because the sentences are short and the information are simple. show less
