Dr. Marder is an excellent practitioner of the art of naval history. He covers the period 1890 to 1905 well, and gives some insights into the reasons for the Fisher/Beresford controversy and lays out the background to the building of the Dreadnought and the re-organization of the royal Navy in the following decade. I find this an excellent source for deeper study of the development of the "Silent" service.
This book was originally published in 1940 and was the basis for his further career. ( )
