Description

Based on the award-winning PBS documentary series, Ring of Fire is this first-person account of the adventures of two English brothers as they explore the astonishingly rich cultures of the Indonesian archipelago. Their fascinating odyssey began in 1972 with a 2,500-mile voyage through the fabled Spice Islands, in search of the Greater Bird of Paradise. A decade of further exploration followed, during which the brothers lived among the Asmat cannibals of Papua and the healers of Bali, came show more face-to-face with the man-eating dragons of Komodo, and encountered the elusive dream wanderers of Borneo. Amid impenetrable rain forests, erupting volcanoes and startling natural beauty, the brothers have captured on film and in words the story of one of the most captivating and intriguing explorations ever made. show less

This book is really fascinating and a must-read for travelers. An adventure through the archipelago of Indonesia with thrills, mystery and humor. Explore astonishingly rich cultures of the Indonesian islands. While reading, you are feeling like one of the explorers. Chapter Nine "The dream Wanderers of Borneo" was the most mesmerizing part for me. I'm thankful that the Blair brothers shared their adventure of a lifetime with me.
Wonderful book. They searched, photographed and filmed some really remote areas of Indonesia. One of the best travel books I've ever read.
just seemed so disorganized. it's sad to think most of the peoples in this book are probably now westernized.
I also recommend the TV series - these guys are quite mad and had a great time being explorers - they managed to get to Indonesia early enough that there were still things for them to discover.
Not the coffee table book.

Dedication
This book is fondly dedicaed to those special people who are least likely to see it, the tribal peoples of the islands, who took us in hand, treated us as equals, and opened their lives to us.
First words
This is the story of a unique ten-year voyage of exploration amongst the steamy islands of the volcanic Indonesian archipelago.
Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)It was to be a chance, too, to point towards the Ring of Fire hidden at the bottom of our garden, which remains, it seems, both a cauldron of our earliest beginnings and a womb quickening mysteriously with our unknown future.
