Charming and humorous, this was another reliable addition to the Hebridean series. Unspoken local customs persist even as modernity is creeping in on the island. The narrator's affection for everything Bruach filters through all her supposed complaints and exasperations. I wish these were columns of a weekend magazine, in so that I could enjoy them like an Adrian Chiles, sparingly and regularly, but also that there would be more than just the two sets of trilogies for me to enjoy.
Always a humorous, warm and entertaining read. The descriptions of scenery and characters are vivid and charming. This reads more like an anthology of anecdotes when compared to "The Sea for Breakfast", which feels like it has more of a continuous narrative. And who'd have thought that Womans Hour would still be going strong on Radio 4 today!
This book is enjoyable, the author is now closer to the people. The end is a bit sudden and awkwardly written.
The third in a series of creative memoirs of life in the village of Bruach in the Scottish Hebrides.
Book three is a series of short stories about events and people on Bruach. I love this writer.

First words
The storm-force wind was blasting squalls of incredibly wet and heavy rain across the loch, blotting out the hills and the sky and flaying the rusty grass of the crofts until it cringed back into the ground from which it had ... (show all)sprung so ebulliently only a few short months earlier.
