Description

How did ancient societies change the environment and how do their actions continue to affect us today? In this dramatically revised and expanded second edition of the work entitled Pan's Travail, J. Donald Hughes examines the environmental history of the classical period and argues that the decline of ancient civilizations resulted in part from their exploitation of the natural world. Focusing on Greece and Rome, as well as areas subject to their influences, Hughes offers a detailed look at show more the impact of humans and their technologies on the ecology of the Mediterranean basin. Evidence of deforestation in ancient Greece, the remains of Roman aqueducts and mines, and paintings on centuries-old pottery that depict agricultural activities document ancient actions that resulted in detrimental consequences to the environment. Hughes compares the ancient world's environmental problems to other persistent social problems and discusses attitudes toward nature expressed in Greek and Latin literature. In addition to extensive revisions based on the latest research, this new edition includes photographs from Hughes's worldwide excursions, a new chapter on warfare and the environment, and an updated bibliography. show less

Some chapters easier to read than others. Mind-blowing examples allude to how the environment in the ancient Mediterranean truly appeared.

Given that the environmental history of the Mediterranean basin has received much scholarly attention in the twenty years since the publication of J. Donald Hughes’ Pan’s Travail: Environmental Problems of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, a second edition of this important work is certainly warranted. Hughes states that the purpose of this second edition is to incorporate his new research show more since the book was published and to account for new publications (viii). Three new chapters have been added, (Ch. 9, "War and the Environment;" Ch. 12, "Natural Disasters;" and Ch. 13, "Changing Climates"), and Chapters Two, Five, Six, Eight, Eleven, and Fourteen have new sections or material (described below), and new bibliography has been incorporated into the footnotes. Since the main argument and much of the content is unchanged and has been previously reviewed, I shall briefly summarize the chapters, focusing on the expanded and revised material. show less
