Nine years after leaving the small Scottish town where she'd grown up, Tag Grainger is forced to return following the sudden death of her father--and back to a life she's long since put behind her. After inheriting a share in a family business she wants no part in, Tag is overwhelmed by the dark clouds of her past: her brother can't forgive her, the nephew she adored doesn't remember her, and everywhere she goes there are whispers about how she abandoned her family. With her old wounds reopened, Tag longs to escape again, until the appearance of the intriguing and spirited Freddie Metcalfe forces her to reevaluate much more than she thought she needed to. But while Freddie is nursing her own broken heart, can she help Tag reconnect with her family and move on from her past?… (more)

This is the story of Tag and Freddie. Tag is an advertisement woman who left town at 18 and hadn't been back for nine years. But, her father's death brings her back to her hometown in Scotland (and away from her less than perfect life in Liverpool England). And she finds out that she's half owner with her brother in their family mill, etc. And considering all the past and current tension in Tag's family, Tag's not sure she even wants the half ownership. And then they all get a look at the Mill, Cafe, Bakery, and Gift Shop's books. Yikes.

Freddie is the manager of Tag's family's Cafe that is next to the Mill. She's had a rough go of it too. Her sister Laura died, leaving her to raise her niece Skye. She's also just been dumped by her girlfriend and then she gets hit with the fact that her job may go away.

There's also the mess that is Tag's family. There is her brother, Blair, with whom she has quite a story line that weaves throughout the book. There's Ellen, Blair's wife, who seems to be close with Tag. And there's Magnus, Tag's nephew and one of my favorite characters in the book, although at times he seemed written a bit older than his 14 years. And it did throw me out of the story here and there.

There was also Peter, Freddie's close friend. But he didn't have as big a role as Tag's family unfortunately.

I would have loved to see more of the other townspeople as well, it's always interesting to see portrayals of small towns, whether they're in Scotland or the US.

It was a fun book with typical, but enjoyable twists and turns.

I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf of Bold Strokes Books. ( )
