The Lodge Mansion is not zombie-proof after all because they have no choice but to leave. If they stayed, I would definitely imagine scenes in the movie "Night of The Living Dead" where they have to put barricades in all entrances. But because of what Archie suggested with the back-up of the butler Smithers, they left their sanctuary and was exposed to every opportunities to encounter those zombies while looking for another fortress.
