So far only read/listened to these 3:

-- The Rose Witch by James Patrick Kelly - DNF
Don't quote me on this --> The old witch died and her servant seems to be taking over the tending of her garden but the roses are now dying which is expected according to some visitors to the garden. "of course they won't grow for you" She gets another visitor "the knot man" and he is on some quest to break a curse that involves visiting the roses his father visited when he was born or something.

I like magic, gardens, quests but I couldn't follow along properly so decided to let it go. I read elsewhere that it may be a retelling of a Hungarian folk tale and iirc, the narrator said she got help with the Hungarian names from Theodora Goss so that checks out.

-- Five Stages of Grief After the Alien Invasion by Caroline M. Yoachim - 3*
Denial / Anger / Bargaining / Depression / Acceptance
Aliens didn't know the planet was inhabited and killed a lot of people. Our MCs are a couple who lost their baby but the mother is in denial. ... the aliens didn't leave but they did try to make things better for the survivors.
I believe the author was trying something (If anyone is curious, my first "failed" attempt at a series of flash, "Five Stages of Grief After the Alien Invasion," is available to read in the August 2014 issue of Clarkesworld. Hard to love it when she calls it a failure but I found it interesting enough.

-- Seven Years from Home by Naomi Novak, narrated by Kate Baker - DNF
I started but didn't get very far before I quit. Outside my reading preference at this time. Government, politics, colonization of a planet, shaddy shit. It's been republished a bunch of times so it's likely a ME THING.

Stellar issue. Julie Dillon's cover is gorgeous. All four newly published stories were excellent in their own way. I think "The Saint of the Sidewalks" may have been my favorite. ( )
