Under a Falling Star

This was a nice romance. I was under the impression that it had a bit more to do with a Christmas/the holidays from the description, but it really doesn’t at all. I never quite connected with Dee too much, and found her personality grating and grumpiness a bit too much for me personally. She did get better when she was with Austen, but it just never clicked in the way I wanted it to. It was enjoyable, but I find that Jae’s books for me are either solidly in the “this was okay and I mostly liked it” camp or I love them. This was one of the former, for me.

Listen to this one on tape so it barely counts as read…. But I’m still counting it. I’m not sure I would have finished it if this was a book for me. I struggled with Dee’s character through a lot of the story, but towards the end I was actually able to enjoy her a little more. Still a decent read, just not for everyone. I think I just prefer Jae’s other stories more.

This is a fanfic of a fanfic. Not too long back there was barely any lesfic and lesbian romances were even more scarce. Into that world, Xena exploded and spawned a number of sites dedicated to fan stories about Xena and Gabrielle. From pure fanfic, the Xena stories expanded into what was termed as ‘uber’ fiction where the MCs were still Xena and Gabirelle but with different names in different settings. Melissa Good* became one of the most popular authors and her uber fanfic introduced Dar and Kelly in Tropical Storm (published in 2006). Under a Falling Star is essentially Tropical Storm. The characters, the characterisations, the relationship, the relationship development, the interactions between the MCs and even some important show more plot points are all Tropical Storm.
