Elizabeth Wakefield and her best friend, Amy Sutton, have big plans for the holiday weekend, including a fabulous party, a family barbecue, and the chance to see a dreamy deejay broadcast live from the Sweet Valley Mall. But the weekend gets off to a surprising start when Amy's pen pal from San Francisco shows up unexpectedly. Samantha Williams seems every bit as nice as her letters until Amy introduces her to the Unicorns. Suddenly, the popular girls can't get enough of Sam and her stories, and Amy begins to feel left out. Why hasn't Sam ever told her about all those wonderful things she's done? Elizabeth and Jessica have a feeling she's making it all up. But will Elizabeth be able to stand by while her twin plans a coldhearted plot to uncover the truth?… (more)

Amy's pen pal mysteriously appears on her doorstep with a story about how she'd sent Amy a letter and figured that since Amy hadn't said no, it was okay if she crashed at Amy's for a bit while her parents go out of town. This being the Valley, the scheme sort of works.

Of course, the flipside is that her pen pal will snag the Unicorns' attention and she'll flip on Amy, not realizing the precise moment when the Unicorns recognize a con when they see one. Amy and Elizabeth come to her rescue, you find out she's run away from home, and very important lessons are learned. Namely, when you run away from home, the responsible parents would call your parents and demand to talk to them, lest a situation like this actually happen. Or something.

I never realized how many Amy books the SVT series brought us.
