The headless horseman was about a man named ichabod Crane. He was a school teacher who gets frightened very easily. a story was told of a bloody battle fought in a valley not to far from where he lived. The valley then became haunted by a headless horseman who's head was cut off in that battle or so he thinks. He falls in love with a girl named katrina, but she didn't like him. She liked Brom Bones. Brom didn't like the fact of competition so he plays a trick on Ichabod. One night after a party Ichabod is riding his horse home nad suddenly out of the darkness appears a black figure with no head. Ichabod is frightened and when the sun rises that morning he is nowhere to be found. People say it was Brom Bones that did away with hime but show more no one knows where ichabod crane really is.

OOOOHHH spooky story. i love mystery stories.

4th or 5th grade classroom is my audience.
Use during the halloween season unit. We could make jack-0-lanterns out of real pumpkins. I could ask the students to come up with an ending of their own and write about it. Then they could retell their stories out loud to the class.
