Description
Someone found him in a laundry basket at the Quick Wash, wrapped in a towel, a few hours old and close to death. They called him "Baby Moses" when they shared his story on the ten o'clock news. It all happened before I was born, and by the time I met Moses and my mom told me all about him, the story was old news and nobody wanted anything to do with him. People love babies, even sick babies. Even crack babies. But babies grow up to be kids, and kids grow up to be teenagers. Nobody wants a show more messed up teenager. And Moses was messed up. Moses was a law unto himself. But he was also strange and exotic and beautiful. To be with him would change my life in ways I could never have imagined. Maybe I should have stayed away. Maybe I should have listened. My mother warned me. Even Moses warned me. But I didn't stay away. show lessTags

My Review (May contain spoilers, fair warning upon reading this review)
This book was such a hard one to read because Amy Harmon really put me in my paces. I can't believe what I was put through within this story but man I just didn't want to put it down either. If you love audiobooks and have Hoopla, I highly recommend this one in Audio because it was superb in this format.
Out of all the Amy Harmon books that I have had the opportunity to read so far, this was most definitely the most emotional and heart wrenching books that I have read from her. She blended in aspects that I was NOT expecting her to write at all. She literally broke my heart with this one and especially that ending, WOW. I also appreciated that the focus of the book show more was more on the man's journey than the heroine's. That is NOT common in romance at all and SNAPS to Amy Harmon for having the courage to do it and have it resonate with so many romance readers. I absolutely adored everything about this book. It had so many layers that I just want to dig into. Also if you are spiritual in any way, you will really appreciate what Amy Harmon constantly delivers in her works.
The Law of Moses is a story about a young black man who really goes through the wringer, trying to find himself and his journey and his purpose and about a young woman who loves him deeply and fiercely but Moses has to come into what love means on his own and so with that comes pain and heartbreak at times. But we also see the intensity of a parent's love in this one. I wasn't expecting how this book turned into at all but what we see our couple go through together with their son literally breaks the heart. I really appreciated the LDS connections to this book in matters of death and eternity type of aspects that just felt so raw and real.
Overall I had a blast of a time reading The Law of Moses and I can't wait to read the companion novel "Song of David". If you are looking for a emotionally captivating read, you can never go wrong with Amy Harmon. show less

4.5 stars.
I was ready to love this book the moment I opened the package it came in. This was my second book by Amy Harmon, and the first one I read The Bird and the Sword had completely blown me away, so I was ready to be blown away again. But I was not. Not from the first pages at least. You see, I do not like romance novels, I do not read them, I do not go near the shelf of them in a bookstore. I don't mind a love story woven into the book, but I don't like when it is a center of the book. And this was a romance novel from the very first pages. I don't know how I didn't realize it was a romance before I bought it, but here I was, reading and thinking, no,no, please no more soppy and horny teenagers, I can't take it! Luckily for me The show more Law of Moses was so much more than a romance novel. It had a love story, yes, more than one actually, but it also had loss, pain, friendship, supernatural, addiction, mental issues, intimacy, mystery, murder and art.

I am at a loss of words with this story. While it was a good book, I didn't find it to be a great book. People have been gushing over this story for some time now. I finally got around to having the time to read it, and I was a bit disappointed... Not in the book but in the hype that surrounded it. Maybe it's just me. Maybe I have been reading such intense and darker reads lately that this book fell a little flat for me.
I absolutely adored Moses. He was such an intense character with so many layers. He was simple, yet complex. He was sweet, yet went out of his way to be a jerk. He was real and raw. He truly made the book. He was the book. Moses. Moses. Moses.
Moses could see dead people. Yes, you read that. Dead people. It plagued him show more daily. He never understood it. It created a rage and need within in him that he could not control nor understand. His actions were always a result of the inner turmoil he went through. They weren't always welcomed, therefore he was highly misunderstood. He didn't have a chance in a real life from the day he was born. And his life truly was anything but ordinary. Falling for such a small town girl was not in the cards for him. It was against the "law", but he did. Then he hurt her like no other could...
I wasn't a Georgia fan. She was so immature and needy. I just couldn't identify with her. Although I felt for her. She truly tried to get Moses to open up to her. To be her friend. To see what she saw in him. She was just too much of a child pretending to be mature. I can't say that I wanted Moses to embrace her, because at times I didn't. I wanted him to turn, walk away and never look back. But we all know that is not how the story ever goes.
The coming together of these two characters is a low and torturous road. It is painful and real. I can see where many say how gripping the story is. As a whole, it really is. But going from chapter to chapter, I expected to feel more emotion. Be more connected to the book. I felt a twinge of disconnect in many places. I guess that is why I found it to be just a good book.
Then when I finally got to the end, I was a little disappointed. It's one of those endings where the entire book builds up to it, but yet it doesn't flow with the rest of the story. It's just there. It happens. It's over. Just like that. I felt a little cheated. The rest of the book was written with so much passion and then the ending was just there. show less

My expectations were high with this one... The reviews are all wonderful and the talk is nothing but positive things. For me though, It didn't live up to all the hype. I thought it was a good read, but it didn't blow me away. The ingredients for a 5 star were there, but I felt like some parts were lacking and under developed. The beginning pulled me in with the angsty romance and the middle sucked me in with intensity, but the ending was a bit scattered. Maybe it was the writing style... I'm not sure. Just something about it left me feeling semi detached from the characters. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that the beginning is so vivid with intricate details and mysterious twists, but than the ending is all rushed. I mean we show more skip 7 years & and get a cliffnotes version of what happened in that time period. It almost felt like two completely different books. The Before part was 5 stars, but sadly the After was a 2.
Moses was a GREAT character and I even liked Georgia, but Eli was a hard one for me... On one hand I thought the twist was genius, but on another I didn't like what led him to Moses's visions. Then the ending.... Is it bad that I wanted Moses to do the opposite of what he did? With all that build up I thought something HUGE would happen, but in the end, it was predictable and lacked the gut wrenching conclusion I craved.
I think with some minor changes this one could have been epic, but for me, it was just an enjoyable read with unique characters. show less

"You're afraid of the truth, Georgia. People that are afraid of the truth never find it."
I didn't find this one to be quite the emotional read others did. Although I did find the journey interesting, I didn't feel a connection to Georgia and felt pretty torn when she made some of the decisions she did. Moses' struggles were fascinating and I'n glad it's all resolved at the end.
