Linden McGregor is tall, rugged, and gunslinger handsome -a helicopter pilot with a Scottish brogue and charm to spare. He's also one of Stephanie Robson's best friends and has fit into that box for as long as she's known him. Beautiful, funny, and an ambitious businesswoman, Stephanie Robson is one of Linden McGregor's best friends and has fit into that box for as long as he' known her. But some relationships can't be boxed, can't be classified, can't be tamed. Back in their mid-twenties and tired of the competitive hit-or-miss dating scene of San Francisco, Steph and Linden made a pact to marry each other if neither one of them are in a serious relationship by the time they hit thirty. It sounded like fun and games at the time but as the years to thirty tick past and lovers come and go out of their lives, the pact becomes larger than life. Sex is inevitable. Friendships are tested. Hearts are on the line. The pact is about to change everything.… (more)

I wanted to like this book, and I really thought I would. But I didn't.
Although I got about 80% of the way through before full out skimming until the end, the whole book was kind of a drag. The first half consisted of Linden and Steph ignoring their feelings for each other while dating other people. I didn't care for any of the characters, and by the time they finally got together I was already bored. I liked the idea of the pact itself, but the plot fell flat for me. I definitely see its appeal to others and still recommend if to fans of Karina Halle's other books. It may not have been my cup of tea, but who knows, maybe you'll love it. ( )

I keep reading (listening) to Karina Halle's books and I'm never quite sure why. They seem to draw a 200 page plot out to nearly 400 pages, which is immensely frustrating while I'm reading but... I keep going back for another? There's something about her characters, I think, that keeps me hooked. I'm never sure if I really like them, but they do feel real and their conflicts are sometimes annoying so. The messy friendships in this book, a true friends-to-lovers story, are like something from my own life. This person dated her and then they broke up and started dating this other friend and now they're with this other friend... You know the story. So the frustrations I have with her books are ultimately what pulls me back, sort of like real friendships. If you see her books on sale or if you have the Audible Romance package, check out THE PACT or SMUT. ( )

When two best friends become more than just friends, the third will ultimately be hurt. But hurting someone you love can hurt you more than you realize. James, Stephanie and Linden all have lives outside of their friendship. But a secret crush has Linden tied up in knots over Stephanie. James holds his feelings close to his chest and won't let our that he secretly still has feelings for Stephanie. And Stephanie just wants someone to put her first. ( )

I really enjoyed this story. It is interesting how 2 people can be in love with each other but fear if they admit it that it will ruin a friendship. This is a sweet story. ( )

I have to admit that I was skeptical about this book's potential quality when I picked it up. Not because of the cover, but because the books and movies that I've come across with this kind of plot have not always been that great in my opinion. This book most definitely surprised me; it was beautiful, heart-wrenching, and heartwarming. You could feel the emotions radiating off the page, whether they were sadness or happiness, hate or love. Great book and though I'm not sure I want to read it again (I rarely want to reread books that pull at my heartstrings as this one did), I'm extremely glad I read it. ( )
