Because there are things locked inside Megan's head - things that are screaming to be heard - that she cannot, must not, let out. Then Jasmine starts at school: bubbly, beautiful, talkative Jasmine. And for reasons Megan can't quite understand, life starts to look a bit brighter. Megan would love to speak again, and it seems like Jasmine might be the answer. I never connected with this book. The plot was dull, even with the mystery component throughout it, and the writing was bland. I found Megan to be extremely childish and I didn't like her. The ending was okay, but the rest . . . blah! ( )

A lovely book about female friendship. Recognisable characters for anyone whose ever been a teenage girl, I particularly liked the relationship between Megan and her mother. ( )

Two stars because though I didn't dislike it, I didn't particularly like it either. On a more charitable day, I might have given it a reluctant three. The protagonist's muteness felt like a gimmick, and I hated how the book constantly alluded to a dark past that was only revealed in the last chapter. For all the ~psychological thriller~ anxiety the story induced, the conclusion wasn't really satisfying. Some of the characters felt incomplete, especially Megan's childhood friends-gone-enemies.
