caimanjosh This might seem a little odd, but bear with me here. Both are stories of a character who starts out in chains, manages to free himself, then works his way up into high society, with an agenda hidden those those around him. One's fantasy, one's historical fiction, and both are enjoyable.

Another good start to a series from Watt-Evans. I really enjoyed the characters, world and concepts of this book and I looked forward to the rest of the series. Fairly standard fantasy, but well written and conceived.

Somewhat contrived, but an amusing read nonetheless.

This fantasy adventure story follows the life of Arlian as he struggles to make his way in the world, and avenge his family and his people after his home and village are destroyed by dragons.

The writing was solid enough, as was the pace, excitement and the descriptions, as far as they went. My problem with the book was that there were parts that were contrived and unbelievable, including some of the superhuman feats that the main character performs. Just because it is a fantasy novel doesn't mean it doesn't have to be believable to hold the readers' interest.

That said, the ending of this particular book in the series introduces an interesting notion of how new dragons come to be. I show more would perhaps be interested to see how the series continues, but it's not a priority on my reading list. show less
This was my first fantasy as an “older” reader and I loved it. It was donated to another avid reader.
The Count of Monte Cristo, with magic.
