My kids thought this book was very funny. I did too, but not solely for the reasons they did. Chicken pox that only lasts a week? Come on! But the main problem this created in my home was that when my kids came down with chicken pox, they pulled this book out. Uh-oh! They wanted crazy straws, and a back rub, and every other special treatment that Arthur received. But it was reassuring for them to see that chicken pox is very common, and even Arthur survived. At least I got them to try the oatmeal bath!
I am a huge fan of Marc Brown's Arthur books. I remember reading this when I was young and thinking about how I got jealous when my mom would take special care of my brother/sister when he or she was sick. This book touches on brother/sister relationships and that lying and being jealous just doesn't get you very far! Also, being sick is never fun but it's nice to know that people will be there to help out and take care of you! Arthur doesn't miss any of the fun with the help of his Grandma Thora.
I enjoyed reading this book for a few different reasons. The illustrations in this story are very detailed. These detailed illustrations added humor and little features which are not found from reading the text alone. In addition, I liked that this book had a plot that was easy for children to relate to. Many children get jealous when their sibling receives special attention. This happened in the story when Grandma Thora was giving Arthur extra attention and special care because was sick with the chicken pox. This made Arthur’s sister, D.W., jealous and in response she pretended to have the chicken pox so she could get more attention. The overall message of the story is to support others when they are in need. When Arthur had the show more chicken pox his grandmother took care of him and helped him to get better. Since she helped Arthur to get better in time for the circus, they both got to go together. show less
How does it affect the entire family when one of your kids is sick? Arthur's chicken pox is no fun but he does get to have chicken noodle soup on the sofa, he gets to take special cherry cough drops and Grandma Thora brings him treats, soothing baths and back rubs. Arthur's sister, Dora Winifred, wishes her family would pay attention to her in the same way and fakes chicken pox by draws spots on her face with a marker. A great book to teach kids about the consequences of lying. This book is also rich in vocabulary words like temperature, cough drops, soothing, suddenly, squishy, torturing and disappointed.
Arthur’s Chicken Pox is a story about D.W. and Arthur, who are siblings, going to the circus with their family, but Arthur gets the chicken pox, so D.W. decides it is a good time to taunt him and make him feel like he won’t get better by the time the circus comes. To find out that Arthur is healthy the morning of the circus, and then everybody laughs at D.W. Although she doesn’t understand why, and then the family tells her that she needs to stay home because she got the chicken pox. The illustrations are vivid and happy, and do a great job of telling the story for children who may have troubles understanding what the chicken pox are. This story gives off the sense to siblings that it isn’t okay to be mean to each other, because show more eventually it could happen to them in the worst time possible. One lesson that can be brought up in a classroom is about “what goes around comes around”, and students can share a story if it has happened to them before. show less
Arthur's Chicken Pox is a great story to read to children so that children understand that everyone gets sick, and that it is best to take care of yourself and to get better. Thoughtful the story Arthur's little sister D.W. teases Arthur about being sick because he is getting all the attention. Little did D.W. know, she would soon get the same sickness, chickenpox! This story is great to read to children to teach the importance of keeping your body healthy. If Arthur's chickenpox had not gone away by Saturday, he would've missed the big circus! But Arthur stayed home from school and didn't itch or complain about his chickenpox, and soon enough they were gone. Allowing the audience to understand that it is okay to get sick is important show more so that they understand the importance of getting back to being healthy as soon as possible! show less
“Arthur’s Chicken Pox” written by Marc Brown is a great story that children can easily relate. In this story, Arthur and his family were planning a trip to the circus; everyone, especially Arthur, was very excited. Arthur had to be checked-out of school one day, because he was not feeling well; his mother determined that he had the Chicken Pox. Arthur was very upset because he thought he was going to miss the circus, but his grandmother came and brought special treats for Arthur. Arthur ended up recovering from the Chicken Pox and was able to go to the circus; unfortunately, his sister caught the Chicken Pox and had to stay home. This is a great story to read to Kindergarten to Third grade students.
