Description
The Torah is the essence of Jewish tradition; it inspires each successive generation. The current JPS translation, based on classical and modern sources, is acclaimed for its fidelity to the ancient Hebrew.Tags

The Second Edition with preface dated February 1, 1967 of 1962 JPS translation of the Torah "according to the Masoretic text." The "Table of Scriptural Readings" is helpful, although translating the names of each parsha instead of only showing the Hebrew names would be even more helpful. There are empty pages for notes at the end of the book. The footnotes concern the translation; "meaning of Heb uncertain" is often used.
I prefer a translation closer to the original: For example, in the Akedah, vayalchu sh'naihem yachdav becomes "the two walked off together" and then "the two of them walked on together." And later vayalchu yachdav" becomes "they departed together." The repetition is important and lost in the translation.

Easy to read translation. When I want to read, not study, I use this translation.
JPS English Commentary written in modern English. This is easily readable. A pleasure and also easier to research passages for speeches or papers.
I do not remember when I bought this copy The Torah, but I have had it for a long time and still enjoy reading it. I do have a traffic ticket in it from 1969, when I worked at the Arkansas Baptist Hospital.
