May try again later. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. I read The Lizard Princess without having read Snotty Saves the Day or Lily the Silent and even though this book is supposed to be self-sufficient, I found the first third of the book to spend way too much time trying to explain the context of the characters in a way that disrupted the flow of the story. I saw that Jack Zipes gave the book a positive, if brief, review ("Imaginative.") and that definitely made me want to spend time trying to see what he saw in it, but I just never got there. Maybe if you read the other two books in the series the characters would be more appealing, I just couldn't get interested in them though. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. When reading this book I found that it was hard to get in to. The book was written like a diary with no person to person communication or conversation. While it does have the mystical realm feel to it, I got lost in the detail of it that I found it easy to get lost in what the author was trying to say.no reviews | add a review

"Complex and gripping. . . . Newcomers to Arcadia will be captivated by the rich history, while those familiar with it will find that Sophia's legend grants them a new perspective on the earlier tales." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) "[The Lizard Princess]encourages big-picture thinking. . . . The combination of a straightforward quest complicated by hindsight, with magic, science, and meditations on the building of myths and the role of stories, makes for a book not like much else out there. . . . Gorgeously written and complex." --New York Journal of Books "This fantasy quest lends a hand toward making our contemporary world a little better."--Foreword Reviews "The impressiveThe Lizard Princess continues Tod Davies' imaginative History of Arcadia series with her trademark brilliant storytelling."--Largehearted Boy "Look inside this world and find wonder."--Kate Bernheimer, editor ofFairy Tale Review "Blending the magic of fairy tales with the great existential mysteries, Tod Davies leads us into a phantasmagorical world that resurrects the complex lore of times past with vibrant narrative energy."--Maria Tatar, editor ofThe Cambridge Companion to Fairy Tales "Imaginative."--Jack Zipes, author ofThe Irresistible Fairy Tale "Innovative form and spellbinding content . . . Stories, as Tod Davies's History of Arcadia novels ultimately suggest, serve as a civilization's backbone, and it is therefore in stories too that we can discover the potential for fundamental change and a better society."--Marvels & Tales Bittersweet. Lush. Human. The Lizard Princess crosses mountains, oceans, deserts, and the Moon Itself to meet her fate and the fate of Arcadia on the Road of the Dead. Her reward is the Key that opens the door to the Domain of Life where wisdom trumps knowledge, as it should in all good tales about the world, whether Arcadia's, or our own. Tod Daviesis the author ofSnotty Saves the DayandLily the Silent, the first two books in The History of Arcadia series, as well as the cooking memoirsJam Today: A Diary of Cooking With What You've GotandJam Today Too: The Revolution Will Not Be Catered. Unsurprisingly, her attitude toward literature is the same as her attitude toward cooking--it's all about working with what you have to find new ways of looking and new ways of being. That said... I didn't find it very interesting. I believe a young reader would enjoy it for its novelty (and it's really not that long), but I got bored. I wondered if I'd get into the story more if I read the previous histories, so I bought Snotty Saves the Day, and boy was that weird. Kinda fun. Definitely a young-kid thing (esp. the name 'Snotty' which kids would find hilarious). BUT even having read the history, I was not particularly inclined to continue with the Lizard Princess.
I want to stress though that I would recommend this to a young reader. Also, the covers are really pretty, high quality soft material.
I hope the author keeps trying and finds his audience!
