Great introduction to Webster, with fun details about him: spooking the family cows with his latin recitations being his favorite pastime was amusing; illustrations were pleasantly offbeat, and there is a ton of good info for Biography reports for grade school kids. Nice Author's Note and references to other books on Webster.

The interesting life of the renowned lexicographer and his ambitious undertaking to create an American dictionary is told through informative text and delightful illustrations.

A very interesting, detailed and well-told story that manages to include many facts and pieces of information without being boring. The illustrations are very creative and play upon Noah's love for words. When he is first starting the work of his dictionary, Webster is shown digging a hole as he "traced the roots of each word". The hole is the pages of a book, and the trees around him are words. A clear message of persistence, hard work and believing in yourself and your goal. An interesting piece of history and a great example of non-fiction as entertaining and imaginative, even as it conveys facts; a worthy addition to a classroom library.
