Viewers of the television show "It's Me or the Dog" are already familiar with Victoria Shewell's simple but kind methods for dog training. For the dog owner who prefers understanding their pets (Why on earth is he doing that?!?), this is an excellent book. She explains the reasons behind many common dog behaviors and gives clear suggestions for correcting these behaiviors. Though she is quite clear that most dog problems are actually owner problems, she makes it clear that these techniques take lots of time and that first time success is unlikely, which is a nice reminder.

I'd like to review this book more thouroughly when I put some of Victoria's suggestions to the test, especially with my lab who likes to walk me (rather than walk with show more me). show less

This book mirrors the show very well, and if full of helpful information. While I don't find everything Victoria says to be helpful with my dog, I think we both agree that what works for one dog will not necessarily work for another. We also agree that dogs need an outlet for their energy. Just like kids, a bored dog is a 'bad' dog. The parts I read were very good, but as some others have mentioned, if you watch her show a lot, you don't have to read this book straight through. Just skim through it to get the 'lay' and then use the index to read the pages that apply to you at various times. Great reference book to keep around.
Vitoria Stilwell is the ultimate resource for positive dog training. This book is a great complement to her show, It's Me or the Dog. I reference this book anytime I need reinforcement in my dog training - her techniques work if you work them.
