The action is intense, the details heartbreaking. When the action is in gear, the book is riveting, however I often found the negotiations confusing. While the dialog of inmates is fascinating, the main characters tend to speak in repetitive parables. Women say no they mean yes. Hemmings makes for an intriguing character as are the hard to read prison guards. Can bad actions be accepted as good intentions? Who’s running the prison? This all too easy to believe mismanagement is a blight on how America treats her convicted? How much punishment is enough?
