Elements of film noir and classic crime fiction weave dreamlike throughout a convoluted narrative that simply should not work, yet Battershill fully commits to the conceit and batters it into gloriously bruised shape. Pillow is a delightful protagonist, slightly dim yet smarter than he thinks, and his interaction with Emily crackles, aided in no small part by Battershill’s magnificently heightened dialogue. Pillow, like its gangsters, is a surreal experience. It’s also a crackling good read that I’ll soon be revisiting.

When the chattiness or weirdness of the situations in the book start to lean too far away from the plot, Battershill quickly resituates the reader with some very direct tough-talk exchanges between Pillow and one of his victims or interrogators, or a precisely coordinated and described scene of extreme violence.

A strange mix of poetic license, brusque humor, and simmering violence that may appeal to crime and mystery fans looking for something a little more out there and give a little kick to readers with a philosophical bent.
