I'm not a huge fan of the DK Eyewitness series, but this is probably the most complete resource I've seen at the upper elementary level. Roughly chronological, with topics covered in a single spread. Has a glossary, index, and websites for further learning, but no bibliography. I was rather disappointed with the back matter, actually, since it seemed more like a filler and less like something the editors expected to be useful.
Another informative text that can be fit into a history lesson, either as a text set or recommended reading for a curious student.
