The Paris Effect

William and Amy are made for each other. William is ruled by numbers. Amy is ruled by her diet rules. When her best friend Kat dies, she decides to take the trip to Paris the two had been planning during Kat's illness. There she finally breaks some rules and realizes there is more to life than following rules.

I was going to throw the book at the wall if I had to hear more about Amy's diet rules. They were boring and messing up her life. I loved it when, in Paris, nothing went as she expected. She lived spontaneously and found out it was fun. Though Kat was dead, her presence was felt throughout the book. She was able to persuade Amy to go to Paris. William was a jerk. He was so similar to Amy it was hard to tell them apart.

The book show more ending much better than it began and I am looking forward to the sequel. show less

I received a copy of The Paris Effect in a giveaway from Library Thing. I found the book a bit off-putting at first - the main character, Amy, is obsessed with food rules, and she wasn't particularly likable. However, given the fact that Amy's best friend had just died three weeks prior to the opening of the book (after a long bout with cancer), and Amy was unemployed, living with a perfectionist of a husband, and ambivalent about starting a family, I decided to give her a chance and keep reading. The book got better, taking a few surprising detours along the way!

Amy decides to follow through on "The Plan," which was a plan formulated by her and her late best friend Kat to sneak off to Paris. She has a number of experiences during her show more trip which force her to leave her comfort zone & really think about what she wants from her life and her relationships.

Overall I enjoyed the book - it was gratifying to see Amy break out of her rut, learn from her experiences, and take control of her life. It definitely makes sense that Burns is planning a sequel - it seems that Amy is just coming into her own in the last few chapters.

The 3.5 star review reflects the fact that this book is definitely BETTER than okay, but not really a four-star read for me. show less

A great read!!

This book details the story of the protagonist (Amy), who goes on a journey to Paris by herself after she loses her best friend (Kat) to cancer - where she does not tell a single soul about where she is going, not even her own husband. However, instead of a dreamy trip in Paris and enjoying her self, Amy grieves over her friend's death and finds herself in various bizarre and crazy situations, one after another while in an unknown place.
This book is a good example of seeing how someone can change over the course of their journey - where they try to figure out what they really want in life.
This book is well-written, unpredictable (as you never really know what happens next in the story or how it will all end), show more descriptive, includes humour and it certainly brings you on one hectic adventure. Sometimes, happily ever after is not always what you expect it to be.
I have loved and enjoyed every moment I spent reading this book! Definitely '5 Stars' worthy :)

Loved this the descriptions of Paris accurate the author has either done their homework or been there. The character Amy has an obsession with diets and Paris know the two very well.

Lovely book - we all have had experiences of dramatic weight loss for me when my world was ripped apart.
Well written book, fast paced - and so very different but hey that is what I loved about it.

A great read for the sunbed

I truly enjoyed this story. I won a free kindle book as a giveaway through Goodreads. I was expecting light reading and although it was to a degree, it included adventure, self awareness, love, loss and sadness. There was never a dull moment and many surprises along the way. I can't wait to read the sequel Paris Ever After.
