I like the premise: real witches & their cat familiars solve supernatural crime at Christmastime. Here, to catch a killer that eats children during winter solstice. But the main character is disturbing; she laughs & makes jokes at inappropriate times. I strongly disliked her making stupid decisions, plainly as plot devices. I don’t think the author realizes the mc is so unlikeable! She comes across as a ditzy female who lacks any depth. SPOILER ALERT: and it takes a man and a gun to show more finally resolve the final conflict. So much for strong women taking down evil by their own powers. show less
This book, the first in the new Cape Bay Cafe mystery series by Harper Lin, was a perfect blend of lighthearted mystery, budding romance and sweet treats. The descriptions of the cafe were so good that I could smell the coffee and almost taste the chocolate goodness of the cupcakes.
Culinary mystery series abound and Harper Lin's books rank among the top in the genre. The recipes included at the end, which has become de rigueur for these types of books, are ones that seem simple enough to show more follow and delectable enough to actually try.
The plot had just enough mystery to be thoroughly entertaining and the main characters were great, very likable and fun, without becoming too saccharine or annoying. These are people that I'm looking forward to reading about in future books.

Cute!
This was a quick read, loved the characters and mystery. The recipes in the back were a cute surprise. Totally going to be baking some cupcakes. I do wish the romance would have progressed faster or fully? But I had to remind myself this is a mystery not a romance!

Granny knows the top topiary expert in the local garden club was murdered although the police have ruled it a suicide. She has to use her spy skills to locate the murderer before it is too late.
I enjoy this series. Granny is wild. I like that her relationship with her grandson is being strengthened over a book. Nothing escapes Granny's attention and she is no longer bored.
