I was given this book by the author in exchange for a review. Also thanks to LibraryThing for keeping me informed on what's available.
I liked this book very much. It wasn't much for laughs but the action was nonstop and the behavior of the characters was understandable if not always smart.I have no idea what the future will provide for killing each other but things in this book were fairly low tech. Nanos to heal you, guns to shoot you. This was set in a time when other planets were settled and Corinth was still sparsely settled and backward.
A troop of marines, rejects of other units, scout for a downed ship. They are ambushed and all except PFC Kent Nielson are either taken or killed. When he recovers consciousness he sets out to find and rescue them. He locates civilians and agrees to help them after he finds out what is happening. Run ins with aliens occur regularly and slowly he collects other military personnel. He also finds mercenary fighters, dead and a few live. Why are they on this planet? Can't stop to find out as aliens hunt any living thing on the planet. Just non stop bombs, bullets and wickedly awful alien dogs. All the characters acted in very human fashion.
There was nothing new in this book, but it was well written and I always wanted to know what would happen next so it was pretty much a nonstop read. Good book - look forward to next. ( )

I received a free copy of this book for an honest and impartial review: Fates Reprisal is a fairly well written book. The premise is based on a soldier stationed on a foreign planet (no development of that in the book), that has been/gets attacked by aliens. Sounds a little familiar especially when the soldier ends up being a busted down special ops. No real detail in all of that which really could have been a beginning of a book. There was a good bit of action and dialogue throughout. I do not think that the story line was anything new but C.W. did a good job keeping me entertained. Award winner...probably not, but still a good read over a weekend. I do hope that the story develops further in the next book, but unfortunately I will not be putting in a pre-order for it. I would have opted for 3.5 stars, but what the heck, 4 it is. Work on the story line and character development and you could have a really good series C.W. ( )

I enjoy military sci-fy, this was one I didn't enjoy. I'm still not sure is Phillips is a private or a Corporal, because in future chapters he is only referred to as Phillips. Not that that is an issue for the story but he is the only one trusted by our hero Kent in his whole platoon. Most of the conversations in the book are written without names of who said what, I find this frustrating to not know who is being teased or who is being serious or who is just being an asshole. By chapter 5 I didn't care if our hero lived or died because of course he can't die before the end of the book, and by chapter 16 I lost interest entirely. ( )

The author gave me an advance copy for review purposes. I really was intrigued by this first volume in the series. It left things on an interesting note, which makes me want to read the next one. I don't normally read military sci-fi but I think Scott has done a great job making it accessible for people like me, without overwhelming the technical jargon. I think this is a great start to a new series and certainly stands out in the genre as a whole. I would love to know more about our protagonist, Kent, and I hope to find that out in future volumes. Fates Reprisal is well written and fast paced. If you like military science fiction give it a go. I would like to read more in the series because I like where it might be going. ( )
