Quite frankly, the book is mood-altering all by itself. The ideas are so much fun - and so often, such great grown-up fun - that it's impossible not to love. - And this though I am not a vegan, and not a cupcake fiend! Add to that the excellence of the recipes and techniques, and the results I've had thus far, and you have a ringing endorsement.

Vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore, I say: buy it. For your own happiness, if not your health, you (or some baker you know), needs this book. Look at the recipes (- and grin). Bake some (= bliss). Give most of them away (know the joy of altruism - and restraint!). Eat your own (for pure sensual indulgence). Hear kudos and requests for more (always gratifying). Then buy ten copies, and give away... :)
This little book is great! For my first foray into baking in many years, I made Cashew Butter Cardamom and despite making lots of mistakes, the final product was lovely and light and the frosting was gorgeous! I gave some to non-vegan friends who couldn't believe there was no butter and eggs. No more shop-bought cakes for me, it's all out of this book from now on.
An indispensible, if flaky resource for creating "conscious" sweetbreads that aren't necessarily any better for you than conventional ones; a cupcake is still a cupcake, whether you use soymilk or cow juice. Moskowitz and Romero, veteran "celebrity" vegan chefs, write in a smarty-pants way without being snobby; that is, omnivores won't be pressured into "converting" just from a silly cookbook. The most impressive part is how insanely sweet and fluffy frostings can be made with such culinary aberrations as margarine and agave syrup. to coin a phrase, om nom nom.
What a fabulous little book! My husband has recently developed a nasty case of lactose intolerance, so I picked this up, thinking it might have a few recipes I could test on him. My first test batch were the golden cupcakes, with the vanilla buttercreme icing, and hooray - they passed the husband taste test!

As far as the cookbook itself goes, it's cute, it's fun, and amazingly, it makes baking tasty cupcakes (for vegans AND nonvegans) downright EASY!
this cookbook is used so much in my house (by both my mom and me) that the pages are literally falling out of it. the cupcakes in this book are awesome; i often bring some to school to share with my english class, and everyone loves them. (at first, i made the mistake of telling everyone they were vegan, and they totally lost interest in them, just like in the movie "year of the dog.") my favourite cupcakes are probably the maple-pecan ones, but i also love the cookies and cream and orange pudding cupcakes. a fabulous book.
This cookbook offers very basic tips and problem-shooting advice. It explains what the basic ingredients do in the cupcake recipes. There are recipes for basic vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, basic "buttercream" frosting, plus recipes for a gluten-free cupcake, low-sugar cupcake, and fancy cupcakes like pineapple right-side-up and rosewater with pistachios or filled cupcakes.

Following the recipes, almost all of these cupcakes have turned out deliciously. My only complaint is that most recipes call for soy milk, which I don't like to use, so I have to adjust and use rice milk with apple cider vinegar (which is suggested in the book). The one cupcake recipe I have followed and have not been fond of has been the one for the basic vanilla show more cupcake! Go figure. The texture has always turned out too dense for me. It also tasted off and too sweet. (I wonder if my rice milk substitution is the problem.) Every other recipe has yielded perfect cupcakes.

While one can obviously adjust the amounts of ingredients, as followed the recipes yield one dozen cupcakes, which is much more reasonable than two or three dozen like most recipes yield. I even like to make just a half batch of only six cupcakes at once.

Overall, this is an excellent baking book with tasty recipes and useful tips and pretty pictures.

Very nearly a perfect book. I know that wishing the recipes were a bit healthier is kind of missing the point, but I wish it anyway. Still, this book is a totally awesome answer to assertions that eating vegan is boring. The cupcakes are gorgeous, and very delicious!
