More than a century after the Lumière brothers made their first movie, the magic of the silver screen refuses to fade. Even silent era classics, such as the futuristic Metropolis, still retain the power to astonish. The talkies introduced new genres-- among them the special-effects blockbuster, first seen in King Kong and reinvented in the 1980s with Steven Spielberg's Jaws-- that continue to inspire and enthrall. In more recent years, technological progress has led to such groundbreaking show more achievements as Toy Story and Gravity. Including more than 100 of the best movies made, from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to Boyhood, the book contains highlights taken from every genre and every part of the world-- from neorealism to the New Wave, and from crime thriller to romantic comedy, fantasy, and sci-fi. The Movie Book is the perfect introduction to this fascinating subject, bound to delight and entertain film buffs and new movie audiences alike. show lessTags

Gift fro my wife. The format is rather distinct and makes it an enjoyable read. It provides a chronological cataloguing of selected movies from pre-1900 to mid-2010. Most entries include a description of the book, listing of key people (e.g. screenwriter, director, actors), and visuals. The choices were somewhat strange. Many were foreign films and unfamiliar to me. I would have preferred to read more about films that I could identify with, either through the people involved or the story line. Earlier I purchased book on music with the same format and found, as with The Movie Book, that I lost interest as the chronology moved into more modern times and the musicians described were unknown to me.
