Flight: The Journey of Charles Lindbergh

This is a captivating story because it tells the story of Lindbergh's flight from his own point of view. It details many of his innermost thoughts and feelings during the flight, such as how he fought against sleep and how he felt as he looked down upon icebergs and ocean. The story is also told in present tense. This gives the reader the impression that the story is happening right here and now and it makes the excitement very real. Another strength of this book is the bold illustrations. They appear to be sketching and acrylics and they capture perfectly the expressions of anxiety, hope, and relief on Charles Lindbergh's face as he executes and completes his famous flight. Flight chronicles the historic nonstop flight that Charles Lindbergh took from New York to Paris. The author did a great job of helping the reader to relate to the difficulty Lindbergh had in crossing the Atlantic. It was vital that he stay awake. To sleep would mean possible death for him. How does he accomplish this? The author tell about little things that Lindbergh did to stay awake. I like the ending. Students could research what Lindbergh's life was like upon awaking. How had his life changed? Older students may want to explore his notoriety and how that may have impacted the kidnapping of his son. It could be included in a unit of firsts, or heroes. I loved the illustrations of this book. It is beautiful. The pictures are either show more oil paintings or acrylic. The brushstrokes are prominent in some pictures. Flight is a wonderful book about Charles Lindbergh's trip from Long Island to Paris. The story is greatly enhanced by beautiful pictures that help tell the story of strength and determination. Flight not only tells of the glory of Mr. LIndbergh's flight, but also of many of the struggles he faced as he flew. This is a wonderfully written biography accompanied by amazing illustrations.

I really enjoyed this book, and believe it would be a good one for children of all ages. It is a picture book, so children 3rd grade and above may think it to be beneath them. The detail in the illustrations, and the way Mike Wimmer was able to portray the emotions, are simply amazing to me, and I believe anyone would appreciate this book greatly due to show more that.

Flight would be a good addition to an art lesson. It is a great example of how to show emotion and tell a story through your art work. Also, I may use it in a language arts lesson where I would have them write a biography about themselves. I would use it as an examply of how to isolate a significant event and write a partial biography based on that. A third classroom idea for this book is to incorporate it in a history lesson that revolves around flight or the aircraft. show less

This would be a great book for a guided reading lesson. It is a level R, so it is intended for older students, in 3rd grade, some into 4th grade. I like that the book not only discusses the semantics of the flight and preparing but also the emotions that Lindbergh was feeling during this time as well.

There are few books that could parallel this for its portrayal of Lindbergh Transatlanic flight. This is the best work I've read by Burleigh with the exception maybe of Night Flight about Amelia Earhart's similar accomplishment. This truly is a wonderful book.

The illustrations are very realistic. Almost as good as photographs. I love the artwork of the darkness and Paris. The artwork was great to look at without reading. The story is fantastic for giving a history lesson. It's not boring like text books can be at times. The story is entertaining and keeps readers wanting to find out more. Critique: Great book that is informational as well as historical fiction. They made the art of flying seem valiant and exciting. I could see this being a great book to get any student who doesn't particularly like reading but appreciates planes interested in completing a project or testing reading comprehension.
