Little grunt and the big egg is a nice prehistorical fairytale written by Tomie dePaola. This story has all the dramatic and humorous scenes as most of the books that were written by dePaola. The grunts live in a cave and had people coming over for brunch on Sunday. They send little grunt to find some eggs to make for lunch only for him to discover a really large egg that ends up cracking and out comes a baby dinosaur. Little Grunt begs the Grunts to keep the dinosaur and reluctantly they agree. The dinosaur grows and grows and turns out to be more than what the family can handle so they make little Grunt get rid of him. After a volcano hits and the George saves them, the Grunts begin to like him again. This story was wonderfully show more illustrated with lots of details and wonderful color. I think the moral of this story would lean towards not making a promise you can’t keep. I would recommend for others to read to their classrooms because I think the children will enjoy the humor in it. Especially at the end where little Grunt says “I guess I’d better call George Georgina! show less
"Little Grunt and the Big Egg" is a tale about friendship. After the egg that Little Grunt finds for family breakfast cracks open and a dinosaur hatches, Little Grunt gets a new pet. Unfortunately, she grows and grows to where she could no longer fit in the home. They had to say goodbye to each other, and their hearts broke. Their friendship triumphs as the dinosaur comes back to save Little Grunts family.
A caveman child (caveboy?) finds a large egg for breakfast but ends up with a troublesome pet instead. It's Flintstones-level science mixed with Clifford the Big Red Dog silliness.

I have definitely read far better Tomie books.
But I also am mindful that there are many little girls and boys who would like nothing better than a pet dinosaur do I will see how this appeals.

This is a cute story with fun illustrations and hilarious onomatopoeia. It is a sweet children's book that most children will be able to relate with because almost every child has been through the case were the parent will not allow the child to have the certain pet. This book touches on that subject and students need to see how the little boy deals with that type of disappointment with respect for his elders.
Little Grunt goes in search of eggs for Sunday brunch, finds the biggest egg he has ever seen. Turns out it to be a dinosaur egg, and like every child who finds a stray Little Grunt begs to keep him. The family reluctantly agrees. George the dinosaur grows quickly becoming more work than the family can handle. Granny Grunt suggests a nice little cockroach as a replacement pet. However, when the volcano erupts, who comes to their rescue?
Like how this cave dwelling stone age family has Sunday brunch with omelets and pancakes, Mama Grunt wears an apron, Papa Grunt sneezes into a tissue, they all say "Ooga, ooga" a lot, and their leader is named Chief Rockhead Grunt.

This is a cute story of a little boy finding a dinosaur egg and having it as a pet. But his dinosaur grows too big and he has to release back into the wild. When a volcano near erupts and the family is trapped, the dinosaur comes back and saves them. It was written like they are caveman that could talk with words like "Ooga-ooga" and the names("Mama Grunt, Papa Grunt, Little Grunt, etc.).
