Reasons in Writing tells Southby-Tailyour's story of the Falklands War largely through the medium of diaries and letters written during his peacetime tour of duty in the seventies and the war itself. This is a fascinating personal view of the Falklands War by a then Royal Marines Landing Craft officer, Major Ewen Southby-Tailyour, son of a Commandant General Royal Marines, who loves the Falkland Islands. Ewen S-T had commanded Naval Party 8901 in the Falkland Islands in the late 1970s and knew the islands and islanders well and, as a yachtsman and sailor, he had made charts and notes for his personal use which became useful during the Falklands War. He was a sort of Royal Marines major without portfolio and, never formally attached to any unit 'Down South' he had a roving commission afloat (and sometimes ashore) that sometimes meant there was no bed for him at the inn. He writes well, using extracts from his own diary and notes he kept at the time, and one gets a really goo idea of landing craft involvement in amphibious operations - he is very much a nautical Royal Marine and one also gets a good idea of some aspects of what the Royal Marines do.
