Four plays by women in the early part of the 20th century. The introduction is actually worth reading, as it covers quite a bit of the history of women in American theatre, including many women who were not included in this volume. The plays selected for inclusion are well written and fit together well; in addition, they are a good representation of the topic, though they are by no means comprehensive. It is merely a sampling, which can give you a taste for more. The particular plays chosen are not only by women, they are about women, but before dismissing that as "chick" stuff, take a look. They deal with difficult issues and don't shy away from ugly things. This is not just for the "gals". ( )
