Holcomb's debut novel. When Children's Services threatens to remove three siblings from their stable foster family to return them to their dysfunctional mother, Jessie Cloud goes on the lamb with her younger sister and brother. The Oregon coast, with its tide pools, rocky cliffs, sand dunes, and foliage provides a gorgeous backdrop for the story. The children seek refuge under a giant chinquapin tree, which becomes their secret hiding place. Surviving on their own isn't easy, and when supplies run low, they must forage for fruits, oysters, fish and berries. T rrough various trials, the children develop resiliency and maturity, which one hopes will serve them well in the days to come..Ages 8-12.
