Uplifting and full of hope, this wholesome and nurturing collection of poetry - my first experience of Angelou's poems - is at times grand in its scale and its range, its powerful imagery evoking big booming senses of nature, traversing humanity's capacity for cruelty but also for compassion and goodness, and is also at times sweet with a hint of cheeky irreverence to the idea of poetry. Honesty and simplicity in poetry form. ( )
