As might be guessed from the title, Mr. Erickson has borrowed a bit from the famous story of 'Chicken Little' to create The Case of the Falling Sky. The chicken in question is head rooster J. T. Cluck and Hank the cowdog falls for his prediction. So does Drover. There's no fox at the Loper Ranch, but Pete the Barncat steps in to take advantage of the panic. Does he get Hank in trouble? Of course! I laughed at the images conjured up by Hank singing, 'Sally May's Broom'.
The other song Hank sings is 'Hiccup Tango'. He's afflicted with them off and on through most of the book.
Hank and Drover's conversational misunderstandings, Hank's messages from 'mission control' (his brain), and the problems that are the cowdog's own dang fault are as show more much fun as ever. (I enjoyed the scene created by using an old riddle.) I'll leave you to find out which scares Hank more: Sally May or a big storm.

John Richard Erickson was born in Midland, Texas on October 20, 1943. In 1966, he received a B.A. degree from the University of Texas in Austin and studied for two years at Harvard Divinity School. He began to publish short stories while working full-time as a cowboy, farmhand, and ranch manager. In 1982, he started his own publishing company show more called Maverick Books, which published the first Hank the Cowdog book in 1983. He is the author of the best-selling Hank the Cowdog series, which won an Audie for Outstanding Children's Series from the Audio Publisher's Association in 1993.
