This was my first Greeley mystery and while I found it long winded at times and maybe unduly complicated at times, I stayed with until the end. I was raise Catholic in a very religious home but I still found many of the inside workings of the hierarchy of the Church covered in this volume interesting and enlightening.
The plot is introduced with the murder and mutilation of three young people found in the sacristy of St. Lucy's RC church. Crime solving Bishop "Blackie" Ryan is immediately introduced as the hero.who figures out the complicated crime which all hings on sorting out who murdered six young people in 1944. Many of the characters are pleasant and interesting.
This is volume five in a six volume plus series with Bishop Ryan as show more the hero. show less

This wasn't the best Blackie Ryan mystery, but it probably raised fewer hackles for devout Catholics...that is, if devout Catholics read Andrew Greeley. I personally find him a good author to read every year or so. But then again, I'm not Catholic--devout ot otherwise! :-)

Just finished reading this on my kindle app....and never once did I think it was even remotely familiar. I had no idea I had read it before. Senility is scary. At any rate, my opinion didn't change in 4 years!

I can't recall what the plot on this specific Bishop Blackie novel is, but I always enjoy Blackie Ryan novels over all of Andrew Greeley's other works. I also enjoy how everyone is tied in together.

Roman Catholic priest Andrew M. Greeley was the author of more than 100 non-fiction works of theology, sociology, prayer, and poetry; a professor of sociology; a newspaper columnist; and a successful novelist, writing in several genres, including mystery and science fiction. Greeley show more studied at Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and earned an AB from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in 1950, a Bachelor of Sacred Theology in 1952, and a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in 1954. He went on to receive a Master of Arts in 1961 and a Ph D in 1962. Greeley was awarded honorary degrees from the University of Arizona, Bard College (New York State) and the National University of Ireland, Galway. In 1981, he received the F. Sadlier Dinger Award, which is presented each year by educational publisher William H. Sadlier, Inc. in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the ministry of religious education in America.
