When Tides Turn

When Tides Turn is the perfect ending for the fabulous Waves of Freedom series. With just the right blend of history, romance and intrigue, Sarah Sundin has done it again — characters that will steal your heart and a story that will keep you turning the pages long after everyone else has headed to bed. This one is a highly recommended read!

Quintessa “Tess” Beaumont and Daniel Avery are the focus of When Tides Turn. The two seem opposite in many ways, except perhaps their commitment to serving their country to the best of their abilities. The no-nonsence Navy man and the vivacious and beautiful WAVE are determined to stay the course and not become involved, but no one really believes that will happen! Sundin does a great job of show more creating two characters who compliment each other. Tess brings perspective and color into the flat black and white world Dan sees, and Dan offers the needed encouragement that Tess needs to find her purpose. Their developing relationship was a joy to behold.

As always it is evident that Sundin has done her research — naval operations, the creation of the WAVES, and the efforts of French patriots and Nazi collaborators. The era really did come alive to this reader. I visited Boston last Fall and it was fun to revisit the city along with Tess, Dan, and their friends. Spiritual themes of judging appearances and the need for rest were insightful and convicting. The faith of the characters was lived out naturally without need for preachiness. Although When Tides Turn is the last book of a series, it is not necessary to read the first two, however, I recommend you begin at the beginning. You don’t want to miss anything!

For fans of Sundin, When Tides Turn is a must-read. It is also a great book for those who love historical romance with a bit of mystery, especially that of the WWII era.

Tess Beaumont enlists in the newly formed WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) yet finds she must go through an arduous interview system before being selected or rejected. Wanting to be seen as useful and not projected as another pretty face, Tess wants to merit service to her country. Substance. Purposeful.

Lieutenant Dan Avery and Tess find they are assigned to the same Boston location. Dan is the show more older brother of Tess' roommate, Lillian. Tess previously was interested in their brother Jim, so she is unsure how Dan views her. She will definitely make sure he knows she is not a flirt!

Appreciation was far better than adoration, a heady feeling.

Dan has long felt as the appointed care for his siblings, demanding lookout and no frill off duty activities. It has carried over into his adult life and mission to be knowledgeable in the latest antisubmarine warfare research. So good, that his commander wants to retain him in the study while Dan wants to put the information to use aboard the carriers at sea.

I liked how Tess and Dan communicated through drawings ~ his straight drafted lines and her added flair in color. Could this transfer over to their lives?

There is deep historical research from war diaries and recounting of actual happenings. Infiltration of information is guarded and known to be leaked to the opposition from someone within their gatherings. It sets doubts in whom to trust and speak around in their normal daily activities, on the job or socially.

This is the second series I have read by this author and find them to be very thorough and informative of earlier days in our country and allies during World War II. The novels in Waves of Freedom may be read as stand-alones but you will want to become acquainted with the Avery family and their friends. This third novel continues on the following day of book two.

We are back with the Avery family, and how I love being with them and catching up with all of their lives. With this book we are right in the heart of battle in WWII, and watching the war turn before our very eyes.
This is also Tess’s story and what a heroine she is, but as tough as she is, she is still quite fragile, and yet she is ready to give her life for a friend. Will she be able over come her fears and open her heart to a bit of romance and love?
Then there is Dan Avery and his fear of commitment after once being burned, now he wants to make the military his life, and there doesn’t seem to be any room for a wife.
All the while there is drama and people who are really out for revenge, and then a major war to fight. A great show more factual read, and sorry that it is the end of this series.

Immersive historical descriptions that encompass high seas conflict, delightful tidbits of everyday 1940s life, and many details in between bring the pages of When Tides Turn to life.

By nature, the novel's main characters, vivacious Tess Beaumont and stalwart naval officer Dan Avery should mingle as well as oil and water, but World War II brings them together when Tess decides to join the Navy's newly-formed WAVES program. Ambition, patriotism, and thirst for meaning steer Dan to a career on the cutting edge of Anti-Submarine warfare, and Tess to a complex investigation into a suspected Nazi spy ring. But only their faith can direct them to the right course for their careers and relationship.

Engaging and very human characters, show more meticulously researched historical detail, and a solid inspirational message make this final installment of Sarah Sundin's Waves of Freedom series an excellent read. show less

I have enjoyed reading this series and since I have been studying about WW2 in school, I enjoyed it all the more. I have liked being about to tie what I have learned in history class with what is in the book because even though it is fiction, it was well researched and gave me a different view on things. I also enjoyed seeing how the characters interacted even though it was a change of pace for both of them.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher, but the review is entirely mine.

Tess is the last roommate that hasn’t found her place as World War II rages on in the Waves of Freedom series. Who will take her seriously when she is all drama and fashion? Lieutenant Dan Avery, one of the siblings, also in these novels desires to make admiral status his only goal. How will God bring them into His will and satisfy both their intentions? Read When Tides Turn and you will discover these answers along with intrigue, suspense, and maybe even romance.
