Description

LIBERTY IS TREASON

Interstellar liberator Magnus Gallowglass, the renegade psychic wizard, travels the stars fighting injustice and oppression. But this time the Rogue Wizard may have encountered a tyrant even he can't overthrow: a stern Protector whose oppressive regime makes Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth look like a Sunday-school picnic. For hundreds of years, this lost colony planet has preserved order by dictating every detail of its citizens' lives - where they live, what they think, show more even whom they may love and marry. Any dissent is punished with the torturer's rack. So successful is this brutal system that Magnus is hard-pressed to find anyone willing to oppose it - until he recruits a pair of star-crossed lovers to lead the revolution, and reeducates a band of deluded would-be aristocrats to become the planet's new rulers.

Here is Christopher Stasheff in top form: swashbuckling, stylish, and slightly subversive adventure from the author of the bestselling "Warlock" chronicles.

Gar Pike, psychic wizard Magnus Gallowglass tackles an incredibly oppressive planet ruled by a Protector dictating citizens' lives, thoughts, and loves, making rebellion nearly impossible; Magnus must find unique ways, including inspiring a rebellion through unlikely aristocrats and lovers, to overthrow this stagnant tyranny, a challenging task even for him.
The fifth of the chronicles of the Rogue Wizard has Magnus and Dirk arriving on a planet that, at first glance, seems to be a very stable, peaceful and successful planet. The people are not starving. There are no wars. There is no rampant corruption. In fact, Magnus and Dirk are about to give up and move on when they uncover a hint at the problems that run deep into the society's core. What they discover is a populace that is micromanaged to the tune of their professions, their houses, even their spouses. Any resistance is met with public punishment and humiliation at best - torture and disappearances at worst. But how can our do-gooding duo cultivate a resistance when individualistic thought is completed weeded out?

So far, I liked this show more book the best of the series. Dirk is more developed as the comic relief guy paired with Magnus' straight man. I enjoyed the fact the initial plans worked well but that a wrench in the works almost brought down the whole works. Of course, Dirk and Magnus managed to show up just in time to intervene and save the day - but nevertheless - having there be even some risk of failure added some nice dramatic tension. show less
