Pete the Cat and his friend Gus make eight cupcakes for a party they are throwing, but find that their treats slowly disappear over the course of the day. They confront their various friends, from Squirrel to Alligator, but each has a cast-iron alibi. Eventually the culprit is revealed: unable to stop himself, Grumpy Toad has eaten all the cupcakes! The friends decide that he must miss the party as a punishment, but Pete argues that he should be forgiven, and given a second chance...
Told in rhyme, Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes is the eighth full-size picture-book devoted to the adventures of that eponymous cool cat, but only the fourth written by illustrator and Pete the Cat creator James Dean's wife Kimberly, rather than show more original author/song-writer Eric Litwin. Although the artwork in these later entries in the series is of the same caliber as in the earlier titles, I have to say that the narratives are not as appealing. Although this one is told in rhyme, it lacks the sing-song quality that made the Litwin titles so appealing, and is somewhat awkward in execution. There is also a difference in tone, I find, as the earlier books focused on having a positive attitude, whereas these later titles seek to impart moral messages. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but it does make me wonder if that was part of the reason for the Litwin/Dean split. Also interesting is that each of these later Pete the Cat books includes a reference to a biblical verse in the dedication, pointing to a religious quotation whose theme is explored in the story. This one referenced Matthew 6:14, which addresses the theme of forgiveness. Again, nothing wrong with that, but it does offer some explanation for the differences in tone and storytelling between Kimberly Dean's stories, and Eric Litwin's. Recommended primarily to strong Pete the Cat fans... show less

We love Pete the Cat books....they're fun and entertaining. This one in particular is my personal favorite.....I love the rhyming flow and the interactive aspect of the storyline....it engages children to participate in counting the cupcakes and figure out who took them.
Pete the Cat makes cupcakes for his upcoming party but soon the cupcakes start going missing! Join Pete and his friends as they search for clues to find the culprit.
This is a fun mystery for the youngest of readers. It is also a simple maths book, but it doesn't seem as didactic or dull as many other counting books. Like all other Pete the Cat books, there is a lyrical style to the text, which makes it a fun read-aloud with repetitive phrases that kids will enjoy. The illustrations are bright and colorful.

Another engaging book in the Pete the Cat series. Pete and his friend Gus investigate the source of their quickly disappearing cupcakes. The reader identifies clues in the colorfully illustrated story until no cupcakes remain. A fun way to introduce the concepts of forgiveness and making amends. The rhyming pentameter is fun and engaging.
This was a very cute book to implement counting and learning of numbers, but it also had another lesson that was sometimes we do the wrong thing and admit it and our friends should be willing to give us a second chance. Pete was willing to let toad make up for taking and eating all the cupcakes, which was a nice thing to do as a friend.
something that is very important in the Pete the Cat collection is emphasizing how to express emotions and empathize with others. In this book after trying to find out who has been taking the cupcake Pete and Gus made for the party, they discover Grumpy Toad has been eating them. everyone is upset, but Pete remembers that everyone makes mistakes and that it is important to forgive his friend and give him a second chance.
Grumpy cat also apologized and was responsible and brought more cupcakes to their party.

Pete the Cat and the missing cupcakes it's another book from the adventures of pete the cat by the illustrator and writer James Dean. This book is about Pete the cat and his friend Gus making cupcakes for everyone. After they finished they counted them and concluded they had 10. But when they got distracted a second, they see that some cupcakes are missing. Pete and Gus go in an adventure to solve the mystery of the missing cupcakes. They go around to ask their friends (which are character from previous Pete the Cat books) and at the end they solve the case and discover that it was Grumpy Toad. They forgive him and Grumpy Toad shows up with new cupcakes he made for all his friends for the cupcake party. The book includes rhymes, show more counting situations and of course social-emotional aspects. It's a great book! show less
