Description

The novel, which was written two years before the outbreak of World War II, satirizes Nazi Germany by including a fascist political faction called the "Zani". There is also a character named "Muso" as a reference to Benito Mussolini. Unlike the first two Venus novels, Carson of Venus focuses on spy intrigue and war instead of wilderness adventuring. It also indicates a change of political orientation from that of the earlier books, where the villains were modelled on Russian Communists.

Another of the 1939 Retro-Hugo nominees, and the only one of which I had not heard before the nominations came through. It's pretty rubbish, really. There is an interesting evil Venusian city whose ideology is clearly modelled on the Nazis, but essentially this is a tale of Ruritanian conflicts which happen to be on Venus, involving our hero as the intended husband of a beautiful political heiress. There's also a desperate attempt to do a gynocracy which is fortunately abandoned after a chapter or two.

Fun Burroughs adventure. You like his stories or you don't. This is the usual adventure involving a visitor to an unusual world. He has done it many times before. This is a pretty good example of the 1930s SF adventure.
Classic sword and scifi. This continues the story of Carson Napier, human adventurer who finds himself on the jungle planet of Venus. Like John Carter, he falls in love with a native woman (who amazingly enough is human) and must rescue her, and in this case, her father, from any number of difficult circumstances, while winning over his prospective father in law at the same time.
Got really bored really quickly. Moving on. Voting period is almost over.

Spoilery thoughts on all the 1939 Retro-Hugo nominated novels here:

Edgar Rice Burroughs was born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago. His father, George Tyler was a distiller and a battery manufacturer. Early in life Burroughs attempted to support his family in a variety of occupations, including railroad policeman, business partner, and miner. None of these proved successful. However, Burroughs had always enjoyed show more reading adventure fiction and decided to try his hand at writing. His first attempt, written under the pseudonym Normal Bean, sold very quickly and Burroughs' career took off. Although critics and educators have not always been supportive of Burroughs' writing, the characters in his stories have entertained readers for many years. Tarzan was the most popular, earning Burroughs enough money to start his own publishing house and a motion picture company. Another character, John Carter, is the hero of Burroughs' Mars adventure series. The continuing popularity of these characters has led some critics to reconsider the value of Burroughs' writing and to acknowledge significant themes in his stories. Burroughs died on March 19, 1950. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
