Another routine adventure, with a twist - Tarzan receives a blow to the head which erases his memory, leaving him nothing more than a simple jungle beast. It is not the last time that Burroughs resorts to this device, but it adds interest to a so-so adventure.

ERB doesn't write classic literature, but tells one huluva great story, complete with chases, captures, switches, and he keeps the reader going forward so well that most simply do not care that Tarzasn dies twice in this story, but miraculously comes alive again with no exp-0lanation, and a lie told in the middle of the book turns out to be the convenient truth at the end to cover for a love affair that simply must finish the book. The critics call it "forumla writingt," but just as Coca-Cola has triumphed for5 more than a century simply by keeping its name in front of the public and keeping its basic formula, so does ERB's work continue. As long as boys will be boys, who dream of being the strongest beast in the jungle, Tarzan will show more coninue. show less

This book is full of what you would expect from a Tarzan book: jungle adventure, damsels in distress, and tree-swinging galore. In this particuar adventure Tarzan takes on the murderous Leopard Men, finally ridding the jungle of their evil menace.

Rapid Rating: If you are a Tarzan fan you have probably already read this. If not, you probably will not like it.

Edgar Rice Burroughs was born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago. His father, George Tyler was a distiller and a battery manufacturer. Early in life Burroughs attempted to support his family in a variety of occupations, including railroad policeman, business partner, and miner. None of these proved successful. However, Burroughs had always enjoyed show more reading adventure fiction and decided to try his hand at writing. His first attempt, written under the pseudonym Normal Bean, sold very quickly and Burroughs' career took off. Although critics and educators have not always been supportive of Burroughs' writing, the characters in his stories have entertained readers for many years. Tarzan was the most popular, earning Burroughs enough money to start his own publishing house and a motion picture company. Another character, John Carter, is the hero of Burroughs' Mars adventure series. The continuing popularity of these characters has led some critics to reconsider the value of Burroughs' writing and to acknowledge significant themes in his stories. Burroughs died on March 19, 1950. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
